Family are the friends you cannot choose, or perhaps the enemies you cannot choose. In every dysfunctional family, like mine, there are at least two people who do not get along or at best just tolerate each other. So what happens when a major crisis comes along? Bam!! If you are lucky, there are fireworks and shouting and yelling and then peace. If you aren't so lucky, there will be tension so thick you could cut it with a knife and a lot of strained smiles.
I've always thought that bottling up emotions for too long is dangerous, so for me, talking out the problems is the way to go and believe me, there has been a lot of talking. These past few weeks have been somewhat of a test of my family's ability to handle pressure and so far, we've passed with flying colours. Yes, there was a shouting match and several meltdowns, but in the end, I think we came to know each other a bit better. Some longstanding issues have been hauled out of the dark recesses of our minds where they were lurking, and brought into the light.
It's painful, but growth always is...
