Crises have a way of distilling all of our personality traits and quirks--concentrating the good and also the bad. When family is involved, the dynamics can be explosive. All the childhood memories (pleasant and not-so-pleasant) come flooding back at a time when one's defenses have been dropped.
It can be like living in a funhouse--depending on which mirror you're looking in, your image will be distorted. Fortunately, we humans have the marvellous ability to adapt and accept and move on.
The funhouse mirrors are just poor reflections, after all...
